she's so small i could tuck her in my pocket. instead i tuck her in a sling. she's my butterfly wrapped and mysterious in her cacoon. chrysalis. baby bunting. she mews. i sway. mommy dances swings and sways waiting for baby's wings to stretch and dry. she'll take off soon. cradle her now while i still can. already i see her form change. she's leaner. fiestier. the never give up no matter what winds blow her off course type. i adore her. she's so small still. i marvel at what she can do with such a small self. yet i can't tuck her into anything anymore. not ever her bed. she flies in her sleep. soaring with her stuffed friends through the hours. til she wakes to find her friends have landed exhausted from the journey onto the floor. she whimpers and flails at the fences of her bed. baby. monkey. dog. all safe. shhh little butterfly. everyone you love is here. she sleeps in a ball and i tuck her neatly into blanket wrapped arms. shhh my petite. we'll stetch our wings tomorrow. together. tonight sleep here. this small space by my heart.
